Karner Blue Butterfly Conservation Easement

At end of Chenell Drive, Concord, NH

This 28-acre Conservation Easement for the endangered Karner blue butterfly near the Concord Airport is a satellite of Great Bay National Wildlife Refuge and is managed by the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department. There are short walking trails that traverse this important habitat for this federally endangered species. Please stay on the trails as this area is actively being restored.

Viewing Information

If you are here on a sunny hot, July day, you will smell the aroma of pitch pine and you may be lucky enough to see the fluttering of small iridescent blue wings of the Karner blue butterfly against a backdrop of low growing vegetation. This habitat supports over 726 butterfly and moth species. The pine barrens are also a great place to hear and see rufous-sided towhees, catbirds, and brown thrashers.

From I-93 take Exit 14 for US-9/Loudon Road. East. Turn right at Blodgett Street. Turn left at Pembroke Road. Turn right at Chenell Drive. Go 0.5 miles to the end of street. Park on the street.
